RAKSCRAPS DECEMBER MEGA KIT

The RAKScraps December Mega Kit was released yesterday and is available to members in the RAKCenter. The theme for this kit is “a whimsical Christmas.” I decided to create sticker elements and this is the result. I don't know just how whimsical stickers are but, hopefully, they can be combined with the elements in the other kits to create some nice layouts. J

MEMORIES OF SUMMER

This little minikit is my response to what I see outside the window of the den as I sit here typing this post … a sky full of very fine snowflakes like white sand. It’s been snowing steadily for 5 hours so even though the ground was bare this morning, it’s now nicely covered with a blanket of the white, fluffy stuff. J I had the van booked in today for winterizing … studded winter tires, oil change, fluid levels checked and topped up etc. However, I’ve had to cancel and make another appointment for next week. Soooo, since I’m housebound, I did the Colour Challenge at Ivy Scraps for November hosted by Jessica’s Sweet Nothings. Using the colour palette she provided, I created this minikit. If you are an Ivy Scrapper, then the download links are available in the November Color Challenge forum. There are several other kits available for download to members in this challenge thread as well as the beautiful kit created by Jessica’s Sweet Nothings. The October Mega Kit at RAKScraps is now available in the RAKCenter. There are many “awareness” days in October – Breast Cancer, Lupus, Diabetes, Domestic Violence and The Sweetest Day. I had never heard of “The Sweetest Day” (October 15 this year) until it was mentioned as part of the theme for the October Mega Kit. A little research made me realize it’s not just a second Valentine’s Day but is meant to acknowledge all the love and caring that we receive from friends, co-workers, family members, etc. and to prompt awareness of those who are less fortunate in our society … the aged, the ill, the disabled. I really like that idea so based my contribution on that particular part of the theme. The Mega Kit will be available for free download by RAKScraps members until November 1st.

SEPTEMBER COLOR CHALLENGE AT IVY SCRAPS

I'm not doing much designing just lately but I did enter the Color Challenge at Ivy Scraps, again. Using the colour palette provided by DigiDes Designs, I created the minikit previewed below. If you are an Ivy Scrapper, you will find the download links in the Color Challenge forum. :)

RAKSCRAPS AUGUST QUICKPAGE CHALLENGE

I’ve made one quickpage (2 sizes) for this challenge and then decided it might be better to just create frame clusters and suggest what papers from the RAKScraps August Mega Kit would “work” well with the cluster. I like the idea of frame clusters rather than quickpages for a couple of reasons … (1) It allows the user to be more creative by choosing the background papers, (2) the cluster can be easily resized, (3) the download file is much smaller and consequently faster to download, and (4) it makes it possible and easy to create whatever layout size the user wishes.

If you have already downloaded the RAKScraps August MegaKit then you have lots of papers to use with these clusters. All the quickpages and clusters will be available in the RAKCenter for free download on September 1^st.

AUGUST COLOUR CHALLENGE AT IVY SCRAPS

If you are an IVYScrapper then you are aware of the monthly Color Challenge hosted by DigiDes Designs. She provides a colour palette and a free kit for those who take the challenge. The entrants also win Ivy$ which can be spent in the Ivy Scraps store. The entry can be a layout using the free kit or another minikit using the colour palette provided. If you do a layout then you may win LOTW (layout of the week) which will earn you Ivy$1 and/or LOTM (layout of the month) which provides $5 in Ivy leaves. Another bonus of this challenge is that a lot of the entrants create additional minikits which are available for free download. Last month (July) I did both and I did the same thing this month. BRUGES, BELGIUM - PAGE 5

Terry took a photo of one of the canals at night. As you can see they are beautiful with the lights. He felt the picture was a little blurred but it seemed so lovely to me that I tried working with it a bit. I think the lights reflecting off the water would give a slightly blurred effect anyway unless a special filter were used on the camera. What do you think of the result???

Terry spent a week or two in Bruges last February and sent me these photos. It’s such a beautiful old city that I have spent some time creating a few layouts. Terry is a super photographer so the pictures needed virtually no altering. I told him the view from the top of the bell tower is fantastic but I’m glad I wasn’t the one to climb 365 steps to see it “live.” I’m quite happy to look at the photo he took. J

The Quickpage Challenge is alive and well at RAKScraps. It is being hosted by designer SNACKPACKGU this month. All the quickpages that are created using the RAKScraps April Mega Kit and the Add-On will be made available for free (to members) in the RAKCenter from May 1^st to the 14^th. RAKSCRAPS APRIL MEGAKIT

For RAKScrappers, the April MegaKit is available in the RAKCenter. As you know, if you are a member of RAKScraps, our Admin has been absent due to illness so everything has become a bit disorganized. Because of this there are three lovely kits missing from the RAKCenter download. There are only 8 kits when there should be 11. I’m previewing my contribution below which IS available through the RAKCenter. I would love to show you the missing three kits but until I know just how or if they are going to be delivered, I’d better not.

PS … I think what I’ll HAVE TO DO in regard to securing my free kits is to pay for storage either at 4Shared or wherever I can get the best deal AND password protect each zip file. This would be better also for downloading because by paying I think there would be no wait time or bombardment of advertisements. Then, in order to pay the fees, I’ll try and sell some designs. Anyway, rest assured, I’m working on it. :)

The stems and flower heads are separate elements so that you can build your own flowers or use the heads without stems, etc.

Again, if you are a RAKScraps member, keep watching for the release of the remaining three kits. Take my word for it, they are worth waiting for. :)

I’m sorry to say that LilyBelle Scraps has been pirated soooo many times – a lot just lately! I’m tired of the time it takes to resolve these issues. I have decided not to post download links for my free designs and I will be removing all the present links. It’s a shame because a few always spoil it for the many. I’m sorry for those of you who have been so kind with your comments but as the saying goes … I’ve had enough. I may be able to figure out a secure way to offer freebies – time will tell.

I’ve been MIA for a bit but have just been occupied designing some bits and pieces for RAKScraps … a contribution for the April MegaKit and a couple of challenge mini-mini prizes. One is for the Journaling Challenge and the other for the Scrap from the Heart Challenge. No, you’re not “seeing things.” J This is indeed, KwikPage 4. I’m not happy with KwikPage 3 so it may never appear. I really need to quit messing around with this kit and get it uploaded and close the project. I’ve promised a contribution for the April RAKScraps MegaKit and I must get that done quickly as we will be doing some redecorating here, including my hobby room. I’m thinking that I may be off line sometime in April for about a week. Anyway, I’ll get the elements and papers together, get them uploaded and then see if I have time to do something with KwikPage 3.

Thanks, Val, for the Box.net suggestion. I checked it out and it seems like it might be OK - BUT (there's always a BUT) - the free account only allows 5 GB of storage space and I have 15 GB at 4Shared (half-used at the moment) and storage space at MediaFire is unlimited except uploaders and downloaders have to put up with the ads. Actually, I feel quite sure the only way to get a decent set-up is to purchase an account. Maybe I should try and sell enough designs to pay for an account somewhere and I wouldn't need to feel guilty about spending the money . On the other hand it sounds like a lot of work rather than fun and that's assuming that there would be people willing to pay for my designs - I don't think so. Shoppers can't get a better price than free. :)

WEARING OF THE GREEN 2011 - KWIKPAGE 2

Again, the word art shown on the square format is not actually on the KwikPage. However, as before, it can be found in the Elements zip file if anyone wants to add it. Also, I’m finding that uploading to MediaFire is a real pain. I had to set-up the files for uploading 5 times before they were actually uploaded. This meant that I opened the files, clicked on UPLOAD, waited for a period of time and when nothing happened, cancelled the process and started all over. The second irritating problem is that the files will never upload into the sub-folder I created for the Wearing of the Green kit. Once the upload is finally accomplished I have to manually move each file into the appropriate folder. The third thing that annoys me is that when I’m “testing” the validity of the link while posting to the blog, I am frequently bombarded with ads using sound and flashing visual effects. I need to keep “close” clicking to get a clear enough screen to check the accuracy of the link. Sooooooo … the purpose of this long complaint is to ask (since most of you don’t care for 4Shared) if any of you know of another file storage site that you like. It will need to be one where I can get a “free” account. If you do, let me know, and I’ll check it out. Thanks!

First, let me thank “Diane” for her recent comment “TY so very much - love this kit. It has been a good while since you posted. Are you not well? Please don't say you're retiring! Please come back! D :)” - it’s lovely to be missed. J No, I’m not retiring and my health is not too bad considering my age. I’ve been busy with other things and, I seem to work at a snail’s pace both mentally and physically. Technical things that once I absorbed and used so quickly now require a great deal of pondering. J Anyway, I see that I am approaching 140 followers (Isn’t that nice?) and I have been working on another Wearing of the Green minikit. There was a WOTG 2008 and 2009 but none last year. I’ve used the same colour scheme so if any of you have the two earlier kits you can use this year’s version as an add-on. Unfortunately they are no longer available for download as the d/l links have been removed. Here’s a look at a word art element from the kit …

I had to give up trying to upload to 4Shared tonight so there are only MediaFire download links. I don’t really like MediaFire mainly because there is no provision for comments. When you are a “freebie” designer, the comments are what make it all worth the time and effort. I’m not really referring to “thank you” although that is always nice to read. I find it most rewarding when someone mentions a specific item that they like or why they are taking the time to download, etc. There are usually hundreds of downloads of the kits posted here, even more than a thousand in some cases, but I can count on the fingers of my two hands, the number of comments left here on the blog and those are by a regular few who, I might add, are at the top of my appreciation list. I know a lot of you don’t like downloading from 4Shared but, at least, it generates a few extra comments for me. There – enough said – I’m just being a silly old woman. And, of course, there are so many free designs available that one more isn’t going to be a big deal. I also made a silly mistake with KwikPage 5. I uploaded two versions in each size – one with the word art and one without. Since the word art is included in one of the Element files, there was no need to include both in the zip file. The word art could have been added when doing the layout. Oh well, what’s done is done – sorry!! J

Since most of the papers are finished, I thought it best to start uploading them as I work on the remainder of the kit. I’ve designed the papers in pairs of complementary patterns and textures. I’ve also packaged them in small lots (1) for faster downloading and (2) to allow you to download only the ones that you want.

Thanks Wanda re the note about MediaFire. I thought only the folder was set to “private” and that wouldn’t have prevented downloading, but when I checked I found that the individual files were set to private as well. I’ve corrected that so, hopefully, it won’t occur again.

I’ve been working very slowly J on a Valentine kit. This is the first KwikPage I've put together and, as usual, it is available in two sizes. Most of the papers are finished; there are 14 patterned and 14 coordinating textured. I haven't finished the elements - there are 51 so far.

For some time now I’ve been receiving requests to offer these free kits for commercial use. I don’t want to stop offering my designs as personal use freebies but if they are to be used commercially, I’ll have to charge a small fee for the CU license. Everything will still be free to download but if anyone plans to use the designs to create items for sale, a CU license must be purchased. I’ve written a “limited commercial use license” and as soon as I can get a PayPal link set up on the blog, licenses will be available on the items marked for commercial use.

Sorry this is taking soooo long! It will be NEXT Christmas before I get everything uploaded if I don’t get a move on. The “old girl” is definitely slowing down. There are 4 papers in this zip file and 1 overlay in png format as it contains some transparent areas. Even with the transparency, I think it looks better if the opacity is lowered or you might try applying a blend mode. I did use it for KwikPage 5 with just a lowered opacity. There are two more paper files plus the elements. Hopefully, they’ll be uploaded and available over the next couple of days.

This last Stash Pack is really all the “leftovers.” J I’ve managed to put together three kwikpages which will give you a good idea of what elements and papers to expect. There are 30 elements and 14 papers, many of which have not been used in a kwikpage. I am still struggling with problems connected with PSP, Windows Explorer, and even Microsoft Word. There are many filters and plug-ins that I used with PSP which no longer work under Windows 7 so I have to spend time writing small scripts for PSP. But this type of “work-around” is very irritating and I guess I’ll have to uninstall PSP and reinstall in the hope that will solve some, if not all of my problems.

Thank you all for the many kind comments and the encouragement you have given me for adjusting to the Windows 7 operating system. I’m still not crazy about it and PSP doesn’t appear to like it much either; however, everything is settling down somewhat. Hopefully, before long I’ll be glad of the change. J I meant to include the KwikPages with and without the word art but just now remembered. However, the cluster used is included as a separate element so you should be able to reconstruct the page minus the word art. This was meant to be the end of the Christmas Stash collection of minikits but I have some elements and papers left over – red and green colour scheme – that I may work into one more minikit. Oh yes, I've said there are 15 elements but I think there are actually 17 and not all of them are shown in the preview. J

The paper used in KwikPage 2 is included in the Papers zip file in two sizes because the faded edge makes it impossible to crop and the pattern will not resize well. I’ve also included the frame cluster that I put together for the KwikPage as a separate element in case you just want to plop it on another paper. There will be a Stash Pack 3C which will probably finish the Christmas Stash for 2010. Like most other people I’m busy with Christmas things and it’s still taking me much longer than usual to accomplish anything on this new computer system. Even the keyboard still feels strange. Sorry, I haven’t managed to get these files uploaded to MediaFire but if anyone is having real problems with 4Shared, leave me a note and I’ll MAKE TIME to get it done.

To say that I am frustrated with my new computer system is putting it mildly – exasperated is a better description of how I feel. There are so many little irritating problems - the list seems endless! One thing that is driving me nuts is that I can no longer view the thumbnails (which are now referred to as icons in Windows 7) of PSP native images in Windows Explorer. I thought I was slow before changing from Windows XP to Windows 7 but just now I feel like I’m “reinventing the wheel.” I spend more time trying to customize and/or fix the various programs that I use than I do designing. Anyway, here’s a wee, and I mean wee, bit of Stash Pack 3. I’ve just uploaded it to 4Shared so far. If I get time tomorrow, I’ll try uploading to MediaFire.

NEW COMPUTER

I finally have a new computer set up with just essentials and security so far. I see the learning curve stretching into a few weeks. Even the new keyboard seems a bit strange. I find Windows 7 a BIG change from Windows XP. I was never tempted by Vista but have no choice but to familiarize myself with Windows 7. Why is it that the older one gets the more difficult change seems to be? I was so comfortable with my "old" system but, I suppose, given enough time, I'll settle into the "new" one. My big fear now is that Paint Shop Pro won't like the Windows 7 environment and I'll have to switch to some other program I can design with. Anyway, here's hoping my old brain is not too thick to learn something new. Keep your fingers crossed for me and, hopefully, I'll be uploading a few more Christmas goodies before long. :))

Here’s the remainder of Stash Pack 2 – 4 papers and 12 elements. There is a second copy of the red cardinal. This one has a black beak because I noticed when trying to use the original yellow-beaked image on light paper, the beak was practically invisible. Since I had to change the beak to black, I’ve uploaded it in case you run into the same problem. I don’t know what’s coming next. I know I said I would try and stick to a traditional colour scheme but I think I might like to try something in gold and white. Anyway … stay tuned … something else will appear in due course. :))

I can’t seem to concentrate on one thing for very long these days so rather than attempt to create a large Christmas kit I’ll just upload mini-bits which I can work on as the mood takes me. I WILL TRY to stick to a colour palette that will allow you to mix and match but don’t hold me to it. However, I will promise to include in each mini-bit enough papers and elements for you to do at least one page. The three papers in this upload are all patterned so you may have to do a couple of plain papers yourself.

A short time ago a friend in South Africa (Pam Knowles aka Pumpy) sent me several very beautiful photos of animals native to that area. They were sent by email and consequently the resolution had to be reduced. However, the photos were so beautiful I wanted to create a few layouts with them. When I first saw Christine Smith’s kit – Gratitude – I immediately thought of the South African photos because of the colour palette. The photos are really “stand-alone” images but I love the contrast between the delicacy of the sheer ribbon-rose element and the wild and rugged vision of the lions. I hope some of you enjoy it also.

This is the first layout I’ve completed with Christine Smith’s new kit – GRATITUDE. My neighbour captured these endearing images of a bird bathing in the birdbath in her garden. She has a lovely garden which is visited by many different birds and animals. I love the photo which shows the bird really thrashing about in the water.

If you check the comments section of each post, you'll see that the same names appear over and over again. If your name appears there, I want you to know that the time you take and your words are sincerely appreciated. I REALLY need to get back to creating personal layouts. This MAY result in a few new elements and papers and if so, I'll upload them to the blog for you all to share. However, I feel the urge to do a Christmas/Winter kit so "stay tuned." HALLOWEEN MAGIC - ELEMENTS 2

If I put the remaining elements for this kit in one file it would be over 31 MB. I always wonder about those who are on dial-up when I package such large files - SO - I've broken Elements 2 into three parts. Also, I couldn't seem to get everything on one preview which was very frustrating. Perhaps it's better this way - you all can pick and choose what you want. Although, if any of you are like me, there is ALWAYS that ONE item in a file that I think I ABSOLUTELY need even if I don't want the rest of the package. :))

In Part 1 there is a vellum page mat in two sizes and I've included it WITH and WITHOUT a shadow since creating a shadow on such images may not be possible for some of you.

HALLOWEEN MAGIC - ELEMENTS 1 - CLUSTER 6 with papers

First of all, thanks to all of you (NanaScraps, makeyesup, and VJ) for taking the time to offer suggestions re the size of paper files. Even if there is no definitive solution, at least I know that others are “working around” the same problem … case of “misery likes company” perhaps??? Anyway it makes me feel better about the whole thing and I have gained new insight into several procedures.

Now, I know I said that Cluster 5 was the last frame cluster BUT, I had this element cluster put together and couldn’t decide whether I liked it or not, so I added a frame to the mix and placed it on a couple of papers. I decided it didn’t look too bad so I’ve uploaded it as Cluster 6. There are 24 elements (not all unique) in the Elements file and more than that still to come. Halloween is not far away so, hopefully, you’ll get lots of photos to scrap. Since All Hallow’s Eve falls on a Sunday this year, I expect there will be some communities celebrating it on the 30th (Saturday evening) and others will hold to the actual date of the 31st resulting in a lot of confusion on everyone’s part.

I think most of the papers for this kit are out but I’ll get the rest of the elements uploaded as soon as I can.

HALLOWEEN MAGIC - CLUSTER 5 and Papers

I did better about the size of this file - it's the smallest one so far and it has four papers with the cluster as well. However, I didn't do so well in putting the preview together. I used the paper I liked the best with this particular cluster and forgot to show the other three. So I quickly added a second preview to show the remaining three papers. I'll get some or maybe all of the elements up next.

GOOD SUGGESTIONS FROM MAKEYESUP ...

Curiosity question on your papers, do you flatten the layers before you save as a .jpg? That has seemed to help me when I add different layers. Know textures can play havoc on sizes of files and I try not to use that part of PSE. Find that if I take the texture and bring it in to use as an overlay and then flatten the image, it helps reduce the size. Also have played around and not saved as maximum of 12 and go down to 8 or 10. Sometime the visual is so slight, it doesn't change the quality and can be still saved as 12 x 12. Could be wrong, don't think using styles instead of textures is better for size too.

I use PSP not PSE (although I’m very tempted to change), but the little I know about PSE (I have an old version) leads me to believe that for most things they are “much of a muchness.” (1) … flattening layers before saving as jpg … yes, I do and even if I don’t, PSP does the flattening for me … but whether I do it or PSP does, it makes no difference in the size of the resulting jpg image. (2) … using texture images as a manually applied overlay rather than through program effects … I’m sure I’ve done this many times but made no connection re the size of the final jpg image so I tried it and found that using the texture image as an overlay does seem to create a jpg file that is a bit smaller. However, the small gain in size doesn’t compensate for the inability to easily control the size of the texture but it’s something to keep in mind. (3) ... save jpg image with smaller dimensions … This is the only thing, as I mentioned before, that understandably makes a real difference in the jpg file size. The one reservation that I have about this method may only apply to PSP. If I resize an image which was created with several effects and blends using either “Smart Size” or “Bicubic” resize, there is a very noticeable loss of detail and clarity. The only method that works well in PSPX2 is the “Weighted Average” method for such images. Because of this I hesitate to use any method of final resizing which might result in a problem for those of you who are downloading my papers. (4) … layer styles … Yes, styles can cause lots of problems and I always breathe a sigh of relief when they do work well. Oddly enough, the styles I create myself seem to work the best.

Thank you very much for taking the time to offer these suggestions. Even the small size difference between using texture images as overlays rather than applying them through program effects, is a good thing to know and I’m glad you brought it to my attention.

maybe if you save the bigger paper files as TIFF...it takes up less space and can always be converted to a jpg file by the user of the kit..your clusters and papers are beautiful and I do love the butterfly paper..its gorgeous

Thank you so much for the lovely compliment and I did a little research on your suggestion re TIFF vs. JPG. The idea is great only the size works in reverse … TIFF files are much larger than JPG files. The butterfly paper saved as a JPG is about 19.6 Mb on my hard drive but the same paper saved as a TIFF is 38.7 Mb. Also, even if the TIFF file were smaller, I’m not sure that all the programs used by scrapbookers to create their layouts can load the TIFF format. In any case, I want to thank you again for taking the time to try and help me … it truly IS “the thought that counts.”

Maybe the solution is just to save the paper files as 6 x 6 images rather than 12 x 12 … BUT … there’s always a BUT … I THINK that frequent loading and saving together with resizing results in loss of detail in JPG files. The obvious thing to do is make papers that are not so complex. However, I’m a “mad woman” when it comes to effects and blends :). Anyone can fill an image with a simple colour so it seems pointless to make papers that simple.

Any and all suggestions are more than welcome!!!

HALLOWEEN MAGIC - CLUSTER 4 ... plus ...

In trying to do something a bit “different” for a Halloween kit, I’ve probably strayed too far from the “usual.” Still, what’s done is done. I’ve one more cluster in mind and that will probably be the last. Then I’ll upload the elements and remainder of the papers. The zip file below includes two versions of the cluster (one with an October date tag and one with a blank tag), 2 papers as shown in the preview, a vellum mat in two sizes, and a border element in two sizes. The vellum mat has a custom shadow. I really like the butterfly paper although I don’t think butterflies fit the “spooky” feel of Halloween. Unfortunately, the butterfly paper is so full of effects and blends that it is very “heavy” – about 20 Mb. It actually accounts for two-thirds of the zip file size. I really shouldn’t have included it but maybe someone else will like it as much as I do. I wish I knew of some method to reduce the size of such files without altering dimensions or losing detail. I’m sure there must be something that can be done if only I were smart enough to figure it out.

I decided to do Clusters this time rather than KwikPages. I think this cluster looks better on purple or orange paper so I’ve included 4 papers in both colours. The individual elements used to create the cluster will be available to you when I upload the elements pack. I’m sure there are lots of free Halloween elements and papers but the child in me always enjoys creating things for Halloween and, hopefully, some of you might like my efforts as well.
